Judge Ends Federal Oversight of International Brotherhood of Teamsters

Judge Loretta A. Preska of the U.S. District Court in Manhattan ended federal oversight of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters on Thursday. The ruling follows an agreement between the union and the U.S. Department of Justice confirming that organized crime influence had been successfully removed from union operations.

Federal oversight began with a 1989 settlement after a racketeering case revealed that organized crime controlled the union. The decision marks a victory for Teamsters President Sean M. O’Brien, who advocated for the removal of external investigative and disciplinary controls.

Some rank-and-file members filed objections to the ruling, citing concerns over O'Brien's leadership and the treatment of dissenters. Judge Preska dismissed these objections, ruling that such grievances were irrelevant to the original purpose of the 1989 Consent Order.
