Jim Cramer Sells Bitcoin Following IBM Quantum Threat Warning

Jim Cramer announced he will sell his Bitcoin holdings after IBM CEO Arvind Krishna warned that quantum computing could break cryptocurrency encryption within four years.

CNBC host Jim Cramer announced on August 3, 2026, that he is selling his Bitcoin holdings. The decision follows a technical warning from IBM CEO Arvind Krishna during a July 31 interview on Mad Money. Krishna stated that quantum computing could compromise the cryptographic equations protecting cryptocurrencies within three to four years, advising investors to become "paranoid" by that timeframe.

This warning aligns with research from Google, which reported in March 2026 that the hardware necessary to attack Bitcoin cryptography might be 20 times smaller than previous estimates. While the threat remains theoretical, the potential for a quantum-led breach has prompted action from the industry.

Bitcoin developers and Ethereum researchers are currently developing post-quantum signatures and quantum-resistant upgrades. These security measures aim to protect the networks from future quantum attacks later this decade.
