Teen Drops Social Media Addiction Lawsuit Against Tech Giants

A New Jersey teenager dropped her lawsuit against Meta, Google, and Snap Inc. alleging social media addiction and self-harm shortly before her trial date.

A 15-year-old girl from New Jersey dropped her lawsuit against Meta Platforms, Google, and Snap Inc. on Thursday, just before her case was scheduled for trial in October. The plaintiff had alleged that Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Snapchat contributed to her depression, self-harm, and social media addiction.

The companies stated the claims were dropped without payment. TikTok had previously settled its portion of the case. This lawsuit was one of three bellwether test cases among more than 3,300 consolidated personal injury claims in California.

Meta argued the plaintiff had a pre-existing mental health condition, while Google-owned YouTube stated the dismissal affirms its position on providing safe experiences for families. This development occurs as Meta faces separate ongoing trials in Oakland, California, and Nashville, Tennessee, regarding claims from various states that the company designed addictive platforms for children.
