USS Nimitz Returns to Norfolk After Final Deployment

The USS Nimitz docked at Naval Station Norfolk on July 9, 2026, concluding a four-month deployment and transitioning into a training role.

The USS Nimitz aircraft carrier returned to Naval Station Norfolk on July 9, 2026, following a four-month deployment to the United States Southern Command areas of operations. During the mission, the nuclear-powered vessel visited ports in Panama, Chile, Brazil, and Jamaica, and participated in Fleet Exercise 250 and the International Naval Review 250 in New York City, where it served as a centerpiece for the United States' 250th anniversary celebrations.

Commissioned in 1975, the 51-year-old carrier is the oldest active-service ship in the fleet. While previously scheduled for retirement, the U.S. Navy extended its active-duty status until at least March 2027 to coordinate with the commissioning of the USS John F. Kennedy. The ship will now remain permanently homeported in Norfolk for one to two years, serving as a training platform for sailors and aviators to support carrier qualifications.

Commanding Officer Joseph Furco and Admiral Karl Thomas welcomed the nearly 3,000 sailors home. Leadership described the deployment as a success in demonstrating American sea power and global maritime security. Despite the approaching decommissioning, Furco suggested the Navy might still require the ship's capabilities, stating he is not convinced the carrier's greatest accomplishments are all behind it.
