Greenworks Tools Recalls 550,000 Kobalt Yard Tools Over Fire Risk
Greenworks Tools is recalling over 500,000 Kobalt 24V and 48V yard tools sold at Lowe's after lithium-ion batteries sparked short-circuits and fires.
Greenworks Tools is recalling approximately 554,780 Kobalt battery-powered yard tools, including trimmers, blowers, mowers, chainsaws, and pruning saws, due to a fire hazard. The recall affects 24V and 48V tools sold nationwide at Lowe's stores and online between January and May 2026.
The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission determined that a short-circuit can occur when lithium-ion batteries are charged through the equipment's USB-C port while remaining inserted in the tool. This defect creates a significant fire risk for users. The company reported 34 incidents of batteries smoking, sparking, or catching fire, although no injuries or property damage have been reported to date.
In response to the safety risk, Greenworks Tools, acting as the importer, is providing affected customers with free replacement batteries that lack USB-C ports. To ensure continued functionality and safety, the company is also distributing charger adapters and updated manuals to all impacted users.
Federal safety officials and the company have advised consumers to stop charging the batteries while they are attached to the tools immediately. Affected owners are instructed to contact the company to coordinate the receipt of their replacement components to mitigate the risk of future fire incidents.
