US Drone Production Lags Russia and Ukraine

The global military landscape is shifting toward mass-scale drone production, creating a stark divide between Western procurement and the output of combatants in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. General Randy George, Army Chief of Staff, noted that DJI produces an estimated 15 million units, while the United States Department of Defense expects to order fewer than 200,000 units by February 2027 through its $1.1 billion Drone Dominance program.

In contrast, Russia and Ukraine are scaling production to millions of units. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine expects to produce six to seven million small FPV attack drones this year. General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine, cited intelligence that the Federal Government of Russia plans to produce 7.3 million FPV drones in 2026.

General George identified brushless motors and controllers as critical capabilities the United States must produce domestically to address these industrial gaps. Despite the strategic demand, public drone stocks such as AeroVironment and Kratos Defense & Security Solutions have seen significant price declines as corporate cash flows fail to match defense policy goals.
