Kuala Lumpur Index Slips as U.S. Attacks Iran

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index declined for two consecutive sessions amid market volatility triggered by ten days of United States attacks against Iran.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index declined for two consecutive sessions ending July 21, 2026, as geopolitical instability and economic concerns weighed on investors. On Monday, July 20, the index slipped 9.16 points to close at 1,722.29, ending a two-day winning streak. This initial drop was driven by losses in the financial and telecommunications sectors, following a steep decline in the Dow Jones Industrial Average and concerns over interest rate outlooks.

The downward trend continued on Tuesday, July 21, when the index eased another 1.92 points to close at 1,720.37. Losses in the plantation and telecommunications sectors contributed to the slide. Market volatility was intensified by a deepening conflict between the United States and Iran. While early reports suggested both nations might renew diplomatic efforts, the situation escalated as the United States conducted its 10th consecutive day of attacks against Iran, raising concerns over oil supplies in the Strait of Hormuz.

Crude oil prices rose to $82.88 per barrel as the conflict persisted. Despite the regional instability, analysts expected the Malaysian market to stabilize by Wednesday, buoyed by strong earnings reports from European and U.S. markets, where the Dow and NASDAQ both closed higher on Tuesday.
