Wisconsin Gubernatorial Candidates Clash Over Data Center Energy Use

Data center development and energy infrastructure have become central points of contention in the Wisconsin gubernatorial primary. Francesca Hong, a leading Democratic contender, is calling for a formal moratorium on new developments to establish a regulatory framework before further expansion occurs.

Other Democratic candidates are proposing targeted mandates to mitigate the industry's impact. State Senator Kelda Roys suggests requiring data centers to source 70% of their energy from renewables to qualify for tax breaks, while Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley argues that facilities should provide 100% clean energy to the grid. Joel Brennan is advocating for the use of battery storage instead of diesel generators for backup power to protect ratepayers from subsidizing AI facility demands.

Republican candidate Tom Tiffany also seeks to curb the industry, focusing on protecting farmland from development and repealing tax subsidies. However, Tiffany diverges from his Democratic opponents by supporting the continued operation of coal plants to meet the state's energy needs. This debate follows tax incentives signed by Governor Tony Evers in 2023.

Public sentiment remains largely negative toward the industry. A Marquette University Law School poll indicates that over 75% of Wisconsin residents believe the costs associated with data centers outweigh the benefits. The primary election is scheduled for August 11.
