Spain Leads EU in Foreign Investment for 2026

Spain became the top EU destination for foreign investment in early 2026, led by a surge in capital from the United States.

Spain emerged as the leading European Union destination for foreign investment in the first half of 2026, attracting over 12.46 billion euros in gross foreign capital inflows. The Ministry of Economy of Spain reported that United States investment grew by 84% to exceed 2.85 billion euros, representing 23% of the total inflows. Other significant growth came from Portugal and Italy, which saw investment increases of 183% and 164% respectively.

France and the United Kingdom remained among the top three investors, with France increasing its contribution by 92% to 2.13 billion euros and the UK rising by 45% to 1.846 billion euros. The Ministry of Economy highlighted a 52% rise in greenfield investments, which create new production capacity. Geographically, the Madrid region attracted nearly half of all foreign investment, followed by Catalonia.

Despite the surge in gross inflows, net foreign investment fell by 40% because disinvestment increased by 142%. The Ministry of Economy stated that the strength of US investment confirms the continued interest Spain generates among major international companies and investment funds.
