Apple Tests Under-Display Face ID for Next iPhone Duo
Apple is developing under-display Face ID technology to replace fingerprint authentication on the next generation of its iPhone Duo foldable phone.
The technology company Apple is developing under-display Face ID technology for the next generation of its iPhone Duo foldable phone. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, the company is currently testing prototypes to replace the Touch ID fingerprint authentication used on the first-generation Duo model.
This transition aims to provide users with a faster and more familiar unlocking experience. However, the implementation presents significant engineering challenges, as Apple must manage sensor placement across both the inner and outer displays while maintaining a thin form factor.
In addition to the biometric updates, the next-generation model may include the Action Button, a customizable shortcut first introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro. These features remain in the prototype stage and have not been confirmed for the final commercial product.
