Customers and social media users are criticizing a growing trend of small restaurants and delis using AI-generated imagery for menus and signage, labeling the results as AI slop and monstrosities. In Chicago, the Chi-Town Deli became a focal point of this backlash after patrons shared images of unsettling AI-generated food, including a Reuben sandwich that one customer described as looking like vomit.

Ali Malik, the manager of Chi-Town Deli, stated that an employee created the AI sign as a temporary placeholder while the business awaits the delivery of a new sign featuring real photographs. The incident highlights a broader trend where small business owners, facing rising costs and tight margins, opt for AI or stock images because they lack the marketing budgets required for professional photography.
