House GOP Blocks Federal Gas Tax Suspension Amid Iran War

Representative Andy Harris, Chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, led a legislative push to suspend federal gas and diesel taxes for three months to provide consumer relief. Fuel prices have climbed to approximately $4 per gallon following the start of a war with Iran on February 28, which disrupted tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Harris argued the tax break is necessary to maintain public support for the conflict until Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities are neutralized.

The proposal failed to reach a vote in the House of Representatives after GOP leadership and House Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman Sam Graves opposed the measure. Speaker Mike Johnson attributed the decision to a lack of consensus within the Republican conference. Harris and allies attempted to use floor debate rules on other bills as leverage, but the effort failed. The National Asphalt Pavement Association warned that such a suspension would jeopardize the Highway Trust Fund.

Similar calls for relief emerged in Michigan, where Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers urged both state and federal tax suspensions as local prices hit $4.75 per gallon. Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall rejected the state-level proposal to protect a bipartisan road funding deal. Democratic opponents, including Dan Schwartz and Abdul El-Sayed, dismissed the tax holiday proposals as political stunts, arguing that ending the war would provide more significant relief than a tax break.
