South African Fuel Prices Projected to Hit Record Highs

South African motorists face record-high fuel prices scheduled for October 7, 2026. Data from the Central Energy Fund indicates that petrol 95 is tracking toward R30 per litre, which would surpass the previous record of R28.06 set in June 2026. Diesel is also expected to reach new peaks, potentially exceeding R32 per litre.

Projected increases for petrol are approximately R2.66/l for 93-octane and R2.83/l for 95-octane. Diesel projections show increases of R2.61/l for 0.05% diesel and R3.01/l for 0.005% diesel. These figures represent a deterioration from projections released on September 14.

The price surge is driven by global oil prices climbing past US$99 a barrel, fueled by the US–Iran conflict, shipping disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Local costs are further amplified by a weak rand and the expiration of a temporary government fuel-levy relief program on July 1, 2026.

The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources will set the official adjustment after the end of the month to finalize the pump prices taking effect on October 7.
