UK Construction Sector Contracts Sharply in October

Britain's construction sector saw its fastest contraction since June, driven by a severe slump in housebuilding despite strong demand for data centers.

The construction sector in the United Kingdom contracted in October at the fastest pace since June, according to the S&P Global UK Construction PMI. The index dropped to 43.6 from 46.1 in September, falling short of economist expectations.

S&P Global Market Intelligence reported that a severe slump in housebuilding drove the downturn, marking the worst month of the year for the housing market. Tim Moore, the company's economics director, noted that construction companies faced severe headwinds from rising borrowing costs, weak consumer confidence, and elevated economic uncertainty.

While civil engineering and commercial activity also declined, the sector saw increased workloads in energy and utilities, and demand remained strong for data center projects. Input costs reached their highest level since June, pushed upward by fuel surcharges and energy costs. Despite the struggle in construction, the all-sector PMI rose to 52.1, the strongest overall economic reading since February.
