Z.AI Co. and Alibaba Launch High-Performance AI Models

Z.AI Co. revealed its Ox Alpha reasoning model while Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. released Qwen3.8-Flash to compete with U.S. AI rivals.

Chinese technology firms are accelerating the release of low-cost, high-performance AI models to challenge U.S. competitors. Z.AI Co. confirmed on Wednesday that it developed Ox Alpha, a reasoning model that recently surged to the top of the OpenRouter marketplace leaderboard, doubling the usage of DeepSeek.

Initially released as an uncredited stealth model over the weekend to gather user feedback, Ox Alpha is an anonymous preview of the GLM-5.3-Flash model. The multimodal system supports text, image, and video inputs with a context window of up to 1 million tokens, specifically targeting complex reasoning, coding, and long-horizon software engineering. Z.AI Co. has made the model's weights publicly available on Hugging Face and offered the model for free for one week.

Simultaneously, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. launched Qwen3.8-Flash, a 125-billion parameter model designed to reduce training and inferencing costs. Alibaba claims the model's performance is competitive with Anthropic’s Opus 4.6 and DeepSeek’s V4-Flash. To fund these AI ambitions, Alibaba raised HK$80 billion ($10.2 billion) through a share offering in Hong Kong as part of a larger 380 billion yuan ($57 billion) three-year investment pledge. The company also released the international version of QwenWork, an enterprise AI agentic tool for markets in Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
