Transcorp Executives Prioritize Gas and Sufficiency Over Energy Transition

Executives from Transcorp Group subsidiaries argue that Nigeria must prioritize energy sufficiency and gas-fired generation over a rapid transition to renewables to resolve persistent power deficits.

Vincent Ozoude, CEO of Transafam Power Limited, stated at the NOG Energy Week in Abuja that gas-fired generation is the primary backbone of the electricity system. He noted that renewables alone cannot support the current base load and emphasized the need for strategic investment in the gas value chain and smart grid digitalization. Ozoude highlighted the growth of Afam Genco, which increased capacity from 48 megawatts to 348 megawatts over five years, contributing to Transafam and Transcorp Power Plc providing roughly 20% of Nigeria's thermal power generation.

Similarly, Chris Ezeafulukwe, CEO of Transcorp Energy Limited, asserted at the Solar & Storage Live Nigeria exhibition in Lagos that the country is working toward sufficiency rather than transition. He argued that Nigeria requires a combination of all available energy sources before adopting a Western-style transition model. To balance these goals, Transcorp Energy is partnering with the Rural Electrification Agency to deliver a 30MW interconnected mini grid in the Federal Capital Territory while continuing to invest in gas-powered generation and distribution utilities.
