Andy Beshear Proposes Abolishing Electoral College in Reform Package
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear called for the direct election of the U.S. President and Vice-President as part of a broader constitutional reform package.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear called for the abolition of the U.S. Electoral College in favor of the direct election of the President and Vice-President during a Sunday appearance on CBS News' Face the Nation. Beshear argued that the current system causes candidates to ignore most states, including Kentucky, by concentrating efforts on a few competitive swing states. He stated that direct elections would force candidates to earn votes across the entire United States.
This proposal is part of a broader constitutional amendment package Beshear calls Fix The Darn Government. The package includes establishing term limits for Congress and the Supreme Court, banning partisan redistricting, and providing constitutional protection for parts of the Voting Rights Act. Additionally, Beshear proposed overturning the Citizens United ruling.
Beyond constitutional changes, Beshear advocated for federal investments in housing to lower costs for first-time homebuyers, suggesting that federal funding be tied to construction speed to bypass overregulation. Beshear, who currently serves as Chairman of the Democratic Governors Association until December, stated he will decide whether to seek the 2028 Democratic Presidential nomination after his term in that role ends.
