Alyzia Ground Handler Strike Forces 140 Brussels Flight Cancellations
Ground handler Alyzia staff will strike at Brussels Airport on October 9, causing approximately 140 flight cancellations for 20 different airlines.
Approximately 140 flights at Brussels Airport are scheduled for cancellation on Friday, October 9, as staff from ground handler Alyzia participate in a national manifestation. The strike affects critical operations including baggage handling, ramp services, de-icing, cleaning, and cargo transport for roughly 20 airlines, including Brussels Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Emirates, and Qatar Airways.
Brussels Airport estimates that approximately half of the flights handled by Alyzia will be cancelled. Disruptions include routes to Chicago, Paris, Budapest, Madrid, and UK cities such as London and Manchester. Airlines using different providers, such as Aviapartner, as well as carriers like Ryanair and easyJet, remain unaffected.
Brussels Airlines noted that this is the third time this year external industrial action has disrupted its schedule, resulting in a significant financial impact. While airlines must provide refunds, rebooking, and amenities, passengers are not entitled to compensation due to the extraordinary circumstances of the strike. Further trade union action is scheduled for October 12, which is expected to impact local public transport but not air traffic.
