Suresh Gopi Appeals High Court Ruling on Election Petition

Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Suresh Gopi has appealed to the Supreme Court of India to overturn a Kerala High Court decision that allows an election petition against his 2024 Lok Sabha victory in the Thrissur constituency to proceed. The original petition, filed by Binoy AS of the All India Youth Federation, alleges that Gopi and his associates engaged in corrupt practices under the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

These allegations include the promise of mobile phones, the offering of monetary incentives, and the misuse of religious symbols and Hindu deity imagery to induce voters. On April 1, the Kerala High Court ruled that most of these charges were maintainable, although it struck down a specific allegation concerning the distribution of shade umbrellas to vegetable market vendors.

A Supreme Court bench, consisting of Justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe, has issued a notice to Binoy AS. The court adjourned the matter until August 31 to further consider Gopi's challenge to the trial proceedings.
