South Africa's IEC Fires Officials Over Voting Fraud
The Electoral Commission of South Africa fired 16 officials for fraud and missing ballots while deploying a new issue tracker to resolve over 1,000 election cases.
The Electoral Commission of South Africa fired at least 16 officials in the Eastern Cape following voting irregularities during a special voting period. Provincial Electoral Officer Kayakazi Magudumana confirmed that six officials were arrested for fraud after allegedly tearing up unused ballot papers during home visits. In Ntsika Yethu, the commission opened a criminal case against a presiding officer after 10 ballots went missing from a storage site, forcing the IEC to relocate the counting process to maintain trust among political parties.
Beyond these disciplinary actions, the commission dismissed presiding officers for transporting political party agents. These irregularities occurred as the agency managed broader operational challenges and misinformation. The commission's Real411 platform registered 34 complaints involving hate speech, harassment, and incitement to violence, prompting the IEC to urge parties to use official channels rather than social media for fraud allegations.
To maintain electoral integrity, Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo announced the resolution of more than 1,000 election-related cases through a newly enhanced issue tracker. Integrated into the Virtual Results Operations Centre, this system allows staff and contestants to report challenges during the voting, verification, and results-processing phases.
