Afenifere Leader Reuben Fasoranti Dies at Age 100

Reuben Fasoranti, leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization Afenifere, died Tuesday at age 100, prompting tributes from several Nigerian state governors.

Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, the leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization Afenifere, died on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at the age of 100. Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State confirmed the death in a statement from Akure, describing the elder statesman as a symbol of wisdom and integrity. Fasoranti had recently celebrated his centennial birthday on May 11, 2026, with events in Akure and Lagos.

Following the announcement, several regional leaders issued tributes. Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun called Fasoranti a democratic icon and patriot, noting that his advocacy for justice and national restructuring during Nigeria's era of military rule helped shape the country's political development. Abiodun stated that the death creates a significant vacuum in the Yoruba socio-political landscape.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the passing as the end of an era. Sanwo-Olu praised Fasoranti's commitment to true federalism, equity, and public service. Both Sanwo-Olu and Abiodun extended their condolences to the Fasoranti family, the members of Afenifere, and Governor Aiyedatiwa.
