Michigan Officials Face Recalls Over Data Center Developments

Dozens of public officials across Michigan are facing recall efforts following disputes over the approval and regulation of large-scale data centers. At least 28 officials across eight communities have been targeted, though most attempts failed due to signature issues or petition errors. Elaine Ferris, a member of the Mason City Council, is the only official expected to appear on the November ballot for removal.

The conflicts center on resident concerns regarding noise, infrastructure demands, and quality of life. In Marshall, opposition to proposed developments escalated to credible death threats against the City Council. In Saline Township, Supervisor Tom Hammond and other board members faced recall attempts after settling a lawsuit with OpenAI and Oracle to allow the construction of The Barn, a $7 billion hyperscale data center. Local officials argue they have limited legal authority to block such projects when developers use litigation to force approvals.

The Economic Development Responsibility Alliance of Michigan reports that these disputes span more than 34 communities and transcend traditional political lines. While some efforts, such as those in Lyon Township, failed initially, some organizers are considering new bids for the May ballot.
