FAA Unveils Mobile Clearance Tool for Digital Flight Requests

The Federal Aviation Administration introduced Mobile Clearance, a digital tool that enables general and business aviation pilots to request and cancel Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) departure clearances via approved applications, including ForeFlight and Garmin. Unveiled by Deputy Administrator Chris Rocheleau at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, the system replaces traditional radio communications to reduce read-back errors and radio congestion.

Developed in collaboration with MITRE since 2016 and subjected to simulation testing in 2024, the tool allows air traffic controllers to focus more on aircraft movement and runway safety. Beginning in August, the system will specifically expand to allow pilots to cancel IFR requests to transition to Visual Flight Rules.

Operational evaluations began in Houston in May 2026, later expanding to Appleton International Airport and New Century AirCenter during the summer. The FAA plans to expand testing to Kansas City, Nashville, and Austin in the fall of 2026, with a full nationwide deployment scheduled to begin in 2027.
