U.S. Launches Economic Fury Campaign Targeting Iranian Smuggling Networks

The United States seized a sanctioned tanker in the Indian Ocean and imposed wide-ranging sanctions on Iranian LPG smuggling and financial networks.

The United States launched a coordinated offensive against Iranian energy and financial networks on June 5, 2026, as part of a broader Economic Fury campaign. The U.S. Department of the Treasury sanctioned 12 entities—including front companies in China and the United Arab Emirates—and six tankers used to smuggle Iranian liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to South and East Asia by disguising it as Omani product. The Treasury also targeted the Iranian exchange house Mehrdad Geramian Nik and Partners Co and its leadership for laundering hundreds of millions of dollars for sanctioned Iranian banks.

Simultaneously, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command executed a maritime interdiction of the MT Davina, a stateless tanker, in the Indian Ocean approximately 20 miles southwest of Sri Lanka. The vessel was carrying 1.9 million barrels of Iranian crude oil loaded from Kharg Island. This operation represents the third such seizure in the region since mid-April and is part of a larger maritime blockade involving the redirection of 129 commercial vessels.

U.S. officials stated these measures are designed to exert maximum pressure on the Iranian regime to disrupt the funding of weapons development and terrorist proxies. The State Department has called on the international community to assist in enforcing these sanctions to prevent Iran from accessing global trade and banking resources.
