India Celebrates 80th Independence Day With Regional Development Pledges

India marked its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, with widespread celebrations across Karnataka and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. In Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister, hoisted the national flag at Bakhshi Stadium in Srinagar and pledged to pursue the restoration of statehood and constitutional guarantees. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary led celebrations in Jammu, where he emphasized infrastructure growth and joined calls for the restoration of statehood.

In Karnataka, celebrations spanned multiple districts with a focus on administrative targets and employment. District In-charge Minister Laxman Savadi announced a 100-day target to accelerate development in Uttara Kannada, while Minister Priyank Kharge announced a new Skill Park in Kalaburagi to boost youth employment. Labour Minister Santosh Lad detailed a hospital adoption scheme and a private employment exchange during events in Dharwad.

Both regions emphasized social welfare and safety. Officials in Jammu and Kashmir promoted the Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan anti-drug initiative, while MLA Mankal Vaidya vowed strict action against the illegal drug trade in Bhatkal. Additionally, South Western Railway General Manager P Ananth reported the commissioning of Standard Kavach safety systems on the Tumakuru-Arsikere and Whitefield-Jolarpettai rail sections.
