Philippines Summons Chinese Ambassador Over Conflict Threats

The Philippine foreign ministry summoned Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan after he claimed Beijing would easily win a potential conflict between the two nations.

The Philippine foreign ministry summoned Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan on October 19 following remarks in which he claimed Beijing would "easily win" a conflict with the Philippines. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. characterized the comments as a threat at the highest level to the republic, while Foreign Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro labeled the language provocative and unacceptable.

The diplomatic clash followed comments from Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, who described China as a regional troublemaker due to its aggressive actions in the South China Sea. In response to the summons, Beijing stated that bilateral relations are at an extremely sensitive and critical juncture and accused Philippine politicians of hyping issues for political gain.

While the Chinese embassy expressed a willingness to maintain dialogue, it warned that outside forces should not steer the relationship toward confrontation. The tension arrives amid internal Philippine political strife, including allegations that Chinese funding is linked to Vice President Sara Duterte.
