Tamil Nadu Government Revokes Student Protest Ban
The Tamil Nadu government withdrew a controversial directive that ordered college principals to prevent students from participating in protests organized by Left parties and the CJP.
The Government of Tamil Nadu, led by Chief Minister Vijay, revoked a directive on August 19, 2026, that sought to block students and youth from participating in protests organized by Left parties and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The original order, issued by the Department of Collegiate Education between August 14 and August 17, instructed college principals to coordinate with police and district administrations to stop students from joining agitations.
The directive followed a July 28 Law and Order Meeting chaired by Chief Secretary M. Sai Kumar, occurring amid nationwide student unrest and state-wide demonstrations following the death of a nursing student in Kanyakumari. The government had demanded action-taken reports from institutions by August 20.
The order sparked immediate backlash from the DMK, PMK, and Left parties, as well as pro-Tamil outfits. CJP national co-convener Saurav Das called the move "unconstitutional," while BJP leader Vinoj P Selvam supported the measure, describing the targeted groups as "agents of chaos."
The reversal is particularly significant because the Vijay government lacks a legislative majority and relies on outside support from the CPI and CPI(M), the very groups targeted by the restriction. The incident, coupled with the recent transfer of a Tahsildar in Karur who ordered the collection of data on Left Party members, has raised questions regarding the administration's internal control.
