AI Safety Researchers Leave Tech Giants for Independent Nonprofits

AI safety researchers are departing major tech firms to launch independent nonprofits and startups, citing corporate deprioritization of existential risk mitigation.

A growing movement of AI safety researchers is leaving major technology firms to establish independent nonprofits and startups. These researchers cite a need for greater autonomy and argue that internal corporate priorities often deprioritize the mitigation of existential risks.

Rishub Jain, formerly of Google DeepMind, co-founded Sampura Research to pursue specific AI alignment issues. Similarly, David Robinson departed OpenAI to advocate for more rigorous safety checks. This exodus occurs as major AI labs maintain that safety remains a priority, though tensions have surfaced, including OpenAI's termination of three researchers who shared internal data with external safety groups.

The shift is supported by a surge in AI safety job openings and significant philanthropic funding, including a $1 billion commitment from Dustin Moskovitz's Project Tailwind to scale safety companies. However, the independent sector faces a critical talent bottleneck, struggling to compete with the massive salaries and signing bonuses offered by industry leaders such as Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic.
