Adobe Faces Analyst Downgrades Amid AI Competition
Adobe Inc. faces stock downgrades from Wells Fargo and HSBC as investors worry generative AI competitors will erode the company's pricing power and subscription revenue.
Analysts at major financial institutions have downgraded Adobe Inc. as investors question the company's ability to maintain its market position against AI-powered competitors such as Canva and Figma. Wells Fargo downgraded the stock from overweight to underweight on October 12, followed by HSBC, which cut its recommendation from buy to hold on October 13. These firms cited execution risks and slowing organic growth, specifically warning that a shift toward a freemium strategy and the rise of generative AI tools could damage subscription revenues.
These downgrades follow a period of strong financial performance. Adobe reported record fiscal third-quarter revenue of $6.76 billion in September, representing a 13% annual growth rate. The company also highlighted that annual recurring revenue from its AI-first offerings grew more than 150% year-on-year.
The company is currently preparing for a leadership change. On December 1, Anil Chakravarthy will succeed Shantanu Narayen as chief executive, while Narayen will move into the role of executive chairman.
