Apple Plans Foldable iPhone Ultra Launch With Limited Initial Supply
Apple plans to debut its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Ultra, in September 2026, though supply constraints may delay sales until the fourth quarter.
Apple Inc. is preparing to launch its first foldable smartphone, rumored to be called the iPhone Ultra or iPhone Fold, likely in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series. The device is expected to feature a book-style design with a 7.8-inch internal OLED display, a 5.5-inch external display, and a titanium frame. To minimize the screen crease, Apple is reportedly using a laser-drilled metal support plate.
Despite reports that production has entered peak output and manufacturing targets have increased to 10 million units, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo warns of significant initial scarcity. Kuo predicts that only 500,000 to 1 million units will be ready by the third quarter of 2026. This constraint may force Apple to repeat the strategy used for the iPhone X in 2017, announcing the device in September but delaying pre-orders and official sales until the fourth quarter to build inventory.
The iPhone Ultra is projected to cost between $2,000 and $2,500. Due to the limited supply, Kuo expects delivery delays of four to six weeks and a potential scalping market where resale premiums reach 50% to 100% over retail. Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics is developing the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and a potential Wide Fold model to compete directly with Apple's new entry into the foldable market.
