Nigeria Labour Congress Issues 14-Day Ultimatum Over Petrol Prices
The Nigeria Labour Congress has given the federal government 14 days to lower petrol prices and renegotiate the national minimum wage.
The Nigeria Labour Congress issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government of Nigeria on October 8, 2026, demanding a reduction in petrol prices and the start of national minimum wage renegotiations. The ultimatum, which takes effect October 9, follows a joint meeting of the union's National Executive Council and Central Working Committee in Abuja.
The labor union demands that petrol prices return to 2024 levels to lower transportation costs and the general cost of living. Beyond fuel prices, the NLC is calling for tax relief and wage awards for workers, as well as the implementation of settlement terms for the Joint Public Sector Negotiating Council and the Joint Health Sector Unions & Assembly of Healthcare Professionals.
President Joe Ajaero detailed these demands in a communiqué, warning that the organization will take remedial action if the government fails to meet the requirements within the two-week window. The union stated that Nigerian working people must remain resolute and uncompromising in the struggle for a fair and equitable Nigeria.
