NATO Launches BALTOPS and Ramstein Flag Military Exercises
NATO began two major military exercises in June 2026 to strengthen regional defense and interoperability across the Baltic Sea and Europe.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization launched two major military exercises in early June 2026 to enhance regional defense and interoperability. BALTOPS 26 began on June 5 in the Baltic Sea region, focusing on maritime security, amphibious operations, and mine neutralization. Organized by the NATO Naval Strike Group and the U.S. 6th Fleet, the maritime operation involves 15 nations, with Latvia serving as a key site.
Parallel to the naval maneuvers, the Ramstein Flag 2026 air force exercise runs from June 9 to 19. This operation spans a vast area from northern Norway to southern Spain, featuring over 200 aircraft from 18 nations. The air exercise emphasizes Agile Combat Employment and Integrated Air and Missile Defence to prepare for Article 5 scenarios.
Logistical hubs for the air operations include the Combined Air Operations Centre in Bodø and Ørland Air Base in Norway, as well as Rovaniemi Air Base in Finland. Sweden's Kallax Airport serves as a primary arrival point for participating aircraft.
