A Unitree Robotics H1 humanoid robot crashed into a wall and an electrical box during high-speed testing for the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing. Video footage released on August 20 shows the robot sprinting down a running track before failing to decelerate after crossing the finish line, causing sparks to fly from its torso and resulting in significant damage.
The incident highlights ongoing challenges regarding spatial awareness and robotic judgment. Despite the crash, the event demonstrates the rapid pace of development in humanoid robotics. Unitree has previously claimed that its Superman robot model can reach speeds of 12.66 metres per second, a velocity that would surpass the world record top speed set by Usain Bolt during a 100-metre sprint.
