Google Quantum AI Reduces Processor Errors 40-Fold
Google Quantum AI demonstrated a new technique called magic state cultivation that significantly reduces errors on its Willow quantum processor.
Google Quantum AI demonstrated a technique called magic state cultivation that reduces errors roughly 40-fold on its Willow processor. The method, detailed in research published Thursday in Science, addresses the high resource cost of producing reliable quantum states, which can consume up to 95% of a quantum computer's capacity.
By using coordinated measurements to detect and filter errors, the team achieved a logical fidelity of 99.99% for T-states. Researchers also successfully transferred these cultivated states between two different quantum error-correction methods.
Google noted that further work is required to scale the technique for practical use. However, the breakthrough provides an experimental path toward building fault-tolerant quantum systems using fewer hardware resources.
