Governors Lead Bipartisan Task Force to Propose Immigration Reforms

Utah Governor Spencer Cox and Delaware Governor Matt Meyer are leading a bipartisan National Governors Association task force to propose U.S. immigration policy reforms to Congress. The group argues that current border security measures, which they claim reduced monthly encounters from 300,000 to 10,000, have created the necessary conditions to balance enforcement with economic needs, particularly regarding migrant work permits.

While Governors Kevin Stitt and Wes Moore support pro-growth policies and the removal of criminals, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin expressed skepticism. Mullin stated that large-scale immigration reform is not possible due to the political nature of the issue.

Legislative activity is also occurring at the state and federal levels. Utah Senator John Curtis introduced a bill to create a state-sponsored visa program to expand the temporary migrant workforce. Meanwhile, Nevada Senator Catherine Cortez Masto reintroduced legislation that would allow immigrants to pay fines in exchange for legal status.
