Deutsche Bank Hedging AI Risks Following Infrastructure Lending
Deutsche Bank is exploring derivatives and shorting AI stocks to offset risks from its extensive lending to the data center sector.
Deutsche Bank AG is exploring strategies to mitigate financial risks arising from its extensive lending to the data center sector. The bank has extended billions in debt to operators during a period of explosive growth fueled by cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
To hedge against potential losses and overvaluation bubbles, executives are considering the use of derivatives to transfer risk and shorting a basket of AI-related stocks. This cautious shift follows internal research suggesting a potential $800 billion gap between the investments required for GPUs and infrastructure and the actual revenues generated by AI.
George Saravelos, the bank's global head of FX research, noted that "in the absence of tech-related spending, the U.S. would be close to, or in, recession this year". The bank's internal concerns align with broader regulatory interest, as the Bank of England is currently examining lending practices to data centers to assess systemic financial exposure to the AI sector.
