Argentina Links Falkland Claims to UK Islamisation

Santiago Caputo, chief adviser to President Javier Milei, argues that the United Kingdom's alleged Islamisation justifies Argentina reclaiming the Falkland Islands.

Chief adviser to the Argentine president, Santiago Caputo, claimed the United Kingdom is being colonised by Islam, arguing this religious shift justifies Argentina reclaiming sovereignty over the Falkland Islands. Caputo cited the election of Labour MP Sagal Abdi-Wali, who took her parliamentary oath on the Qur'an, as evidence that Britain now poses a threat to Western civilisation.

President Javier Milei amplified these remarks on X, framing the recovery of the islands—known in Argentina as the Malvinas—as a cause for the west to prevent the encroachment of an Islamic state in the South Atlantic. This rhetoric accompanies economic threats from the Milei administration, including plans to criminalize executives in the islands' oil industry and target the fishing sector, specifically the £1.6bn Sea Lion oil project.

The Government of the United Kingdom reaffirmed its commitment to the islanders' right to self-determination, citing a 2013 referendum where 99.8% of residents voted to remain British. The UK government has also sought assurances from Interpol to protect individuals working within the territory.
