Japan Investment Corp Plans 1.3 Trillion Yen JSR Sale

Japan Investment Corp plans to sell semiconductor materials maker JSR to Mitsui Chemicals in a deal potentially exceeding 1.3 trillion yen.

The state-backed Japan Investment Corp plans to sell semiconductor materials manufacturer JSR to Mitsui Chemicals in a transaction potentially exceeding 1.3 trillion yen ($8.20 billion). A final decision on the deal is expected within the month.

JIC acquired JSR two years ago for approximately 900 billion yen. The fund is now seeking to capitalize on increased valuations driven by the global AI investment boom. JSR is a primary producer of photoresists, which are essential materials used in semiconductor wafer production. The sale is intended to strengthen the competitiveness of the domestic chip supply chain.

Shares in Mitsui Chemicals fell 13% following the report. Investors expressed concern over the funding required for the acquisition, as the projected deal value exceeds Mitsui Chemicals' current market capitalization of approximately 800 billion yen. If completed, the transaction would be one of the largest in the history of the Japanese chemicals sector.
