Abdussamad Dasuki Urges Single-Day 2027 Nigerian Elections

Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives Abdussamad Dasuki urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct the 2027 federal and state elections on a single day. He argued that a combined vote would reduce government expenditure on logistics and allowances while minimizing socio-economic disruptions.

Dasuki emphasized that a one-day process would limit travel risks for participants given the current security challenges in Nigeria. He proposed a system involving five ballot papers, which would be reduced to four in the eight states currently holding off-cycle governorship elections.

In addition to the scheduling change, Dasuki called for the removal of Section 63(2) of the Electoral Act. He claimed the provision creates a loophole for counterfeit ballots by allowing returning officers to count papers that lack official marks. Dasuki also advocated for improved military housing, suggesting that forfeited properties be repurposed as accommodation for Armed Forces personnel to boost morale.
