Brazil Police Probe US State Department Election Interference
Brazil's Federal Police opened a preliminary inquiry into a US$1 million State Department grant allegedly used to influence the country's presidential election.
The Federal Police of Brazil opened a preliminary inquiry on October 4, 2026, to investigate possible United States interference in the Brazilian presidential election. The probe was initiated following an October 1 request from the Attorney General of the Union regarding a US$1 million grant from the United States Department of State.
The grant, titled "Countering Lawfare and Censorship in Brazil," was allegedly directed toward groups opposing the Brazilian Supreme Court. The Attorney General of the Union suggested these funds might be part of a broader effort to attack national sovereignty and the judiciary.
Federal Police chief Andrei Rodrigues stated the investigation is currently a preliminary procedure within the intelligence directorate rather than a formal criminal inquiry. He also noted that this probe is distinct from a separate investigation into security threats to diplomatic sites, which found no effective risk to embassies.
Kassio Nunes Marques, president of the Superior Electoral Court, maintained that there is no concrete indication of international interference in the voting process. Justice Minister Wellington Lima e Silva has urged restraint and scrutiny as the investigation proceeds.
