Helena Buonanno Foulkes Leads Rhode Island Gubernatorial Race
Helena Buonanno Foulkes leads the Rhode Island gubernatorial election, while David Morales appears set to become the youngest mayor in Providence history.
Election results from Tuesday indicate that Helena Buonanno Foulkes is set to win the Rhode Island gubernatorial race. She leads incumbent Dan McKee, as well as candidates Ken Block and Aaron Guckian. McKee's potential loss follows a historic primary defeat, making him the first incumbent governor in Rhode Island to lose a primary in 32 years.
In Providence, 28-year-old David Morales leads the mayoral race against Dave Talan. If victorious, Morales will become the youngest mayor in the city's history. His campaign focused on implementing rent caps and terminating the city's contract with Flock for license plate reading cameras.
Other expected outcomes include Kim Ahern replacing Peter Neronha as attorney general and James A. Diossa winning the general treasurer race. In congressional contests, Seth Magaziner, Gabe Amo, and Jack Reed are anticipated to retain their seats. During the campaign, Magaziner's opponent, Victor Mellor, defended his participation in the January 6, 2021, US Capitol riot.
