Indonesia and Kuwait Strengthen Energy and Trade Ties
Indonesia and Kuwait agreed to bolster energy security and accelerate free trade negotiations with the Gulf Cooperation Council during talks in Jakarta.
Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto and Kuwaiti Ambassador Khalid Jassim Alyassin met in Jakarta between June 17 and June 19, 2026, to strengthen bilateral cooperation on energy security and supply chain resilience. The discussions focused on mitigating the impact of volatile global oil markets and geopolitical uncertainty.
The two nations reaffirmed their commitment to the oil and gas sector, specifically supporting eight exploration ventures led by the Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company in the Natuna Sea, East Kalimantan, the Anambas Islands, and Southeast Sulawesi. This collaboration is supported by a 2019 memorandum of understanding regarding oil, gas, and petrochemicals.
Beyond energy, Indonesia and Kuwait pledged to expedite negotiations for a free trade agreement between Indonesia and the Gulf Cooperation Council, targeting completion by the end of 2026. This move follows a period of economic growth, with bilateral trade increasing by 10.69 percent in 2025 to reach 606 million US dollars, while Kuwaiti investments in Indonesia's energy sector totaled 1.2 million US dollars.
