Yorkshire Water Urges Caution During Regional Heatwave
Yorkshire Water advises customers to reduce usage during a heatwave, though reservoir stocks remain high enough to avoid hosepipe restrictions this summer.
Yorkshire Water is urging customers across Yorkshire and the Humber to use water wisely as the region faces a heatwave. The company reports that previous heatwaves caused usage spikes of 190 million litres, a volume equivalent to the combined daily supply of Leeds and Harrogate. This appeal is part of the national Let’s Save Water campaign, supported by the Met Office and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.
Despite the current heat, the company states it is in a strong position with reservoir stocks at 75.7%, significantly higher than the 53.8% recorded at the same time in 2025. This resilience follows a wet start to the year, the replacement of over 200km of water mains, and the installation of 250,000 smart meters. As a result, the utility does not expect to implement hosepipe restrictions this summer.
Environmental and meteorological experts warn that high reservoir levels do not eliminate risk. The Met Office noted that rainfall on hardened ground often runs off rather than soaking into the soil, while the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust emphasized the need to balance human demand with the needs of the environment to ensure long-term sustainability.
