USA Today Co. Sues OpenAI for $250 Million
USA Today Co. filed a lawsuit against OpenAI alleging the company used hundreds of thousands of articles without permission to train AI models.
USA Today Co. and several of its local newspapers filed a lawsuit against OpenAI on Thursday, seeking more than $250 million in damages. The publisher alleges that OpenAI copied hundreds of thousands of articles without permission to train its artificial intelligence models, causing real and continuing harm to its media outlets.
The lawsuit asserts that OpenAI's commercial success rests on large-scale copyright infringement. The legal action includes several local newspapers, such as The Tennessean, Indy Star, The Columbus Dispatch, and The Oklahoman.
This filing adds to a growing series of copyright disputes involving OpenAI. Other publishers pursuing similar legal action include The New York Times, The Intercept, Ziff Davis, and a coalition of nearly 400 local newspapers.
