Supermicro Appoints New CFO Amid $2.5 Billion Smuggling Case
Super Micro Computer appointed Mark Long as CFO following a board investigation and the arrest of co-founder Yih-Shyan Liaw for smuggling chips to China.
Super Micro Computer appointed Mark Long as its new chief financial officer on Wednesday, effective immediately. Long, a former Western Digital executive, replaces David Weigand after a board-level investigation identified process lapses within the company.
The leadership change comes as the company manages significant legal turmoil surrounding a $2.5 billion smuggling operation. Co-founder Yih-Shyan "Wally" Liaw was arrested in March 2026 for allegedly using deceptive tactics, including dummy servers, to route Nvidia chips to China. Additionally, contractor Ting-Wei "Willy" Sun recently pleaded guilty to conspiracy and obstruction of justice related to the same scheme.
While Supermicro is not a defendant in the case and maintains it is cooperating with law enforcement, the company has received subpoenas from the SEC, the Bureau of Industry and Security, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. CEO Charles Liang stated that Long will have "an immediate positive impact" on the company's financial execution.
