Houthi Missile Strikes Kill 12 at Riyadh Airport
Houthi militants launched a renewed campaign of missile and drone strikes against Saudi Arabia, killing 12 people in a major attack on Riyadh's main airport.
The Houthis launched a renewed campaign of missile and drone strikes against Saudi Arabia on Saturday, targeting key oil infrastructure and Riyadh's main airport. The assault on the airport resulted in 12 deaths and more than 300 injuries, causing widespread flight cancellations and reroutes. This marks a significant escalation in hostilities that resumed after a four-year truce, following a July Saudi bombardment of Sanaa's airport intended to block a Houthi delegation.
The militant group utilized a diverse arsenal of Iranian-derived medium-range ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones, including components sourced from China. Reports indicate the Houthis have attempted to use artificial intelligence to develop guided rockets and hypersonic glide vehicles. While Saudi-led coalitions claim to have destroyed 127 Houthi storage facilities, the group remains capable of sustaining long-term conflict.
Iran has provided critical military technology and training, helping the Houthis achieve near self-sufficiency in weapons assembly. The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Research and Self-Sufficiency Jihad Organization provided specific knowledge of missile systems and maintains advisors in Yemen. Saudi vulnerability has increased as recent United States military engagements with Iran depleted regional interceptor stocks.
