NPP Marches in Accra to Protest Democratic Erosion

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) organized a protest march in Accra on Thursday titled Democracy Under Attack to denounce the administration of President John Dramani Mahama. Led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, demonstrators marched from Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park to the Supreme Court, Parliament House, and the Jubilee House.

Opposition leaders accused the National Democratic Congress administration of undermining democratic governance, restricting freedom of speech, and practicing selective justice. The NPP specifically cited the removal of the Chief Justice as a blow to judicial independence and expressed concern over the intimidation of citizens expressing contrary opinions on social media and television. Former Member of Parliament Samuel Atta Akyea stated the demonstration aimed to correct the political trajectory if the president turns democracy upside down.

The party presented petitions to the Judiciary and the Presidency calling for the protection of constitutional rights. Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah received the petitions, stating the government would examine the content for a response. During the event, Alexander Afenyo-Markin warned that the NPP would prosecute officials for malfeasance at state-owned institutions, such as GoldBod, if the party wins the 2028 election.
