Meta Spends Hundreds of Millions on Microsoft Azure AI

Meta Platforms Inc. spends hundreds of millions of dollars annually to access Microsoft Corporation's Azure cloud service, establishing itself as one of the provider's largest AI customers. The company consumes trillions of tokens through the platform, primarily utilizing the service to support coding assistance.

This financial relationship illustrates a broader trend in the industry where AI revenue remains concentrated among a small group of large, digital-native software companies rather than seeing broad economic adoption.

Due to the high cost of these services, Meta is reportedly exploring the development of its own API business. This move would allow the company to reduce its reliance on external vendors and monetize AI services in-house. Both Microsoft and Meta declined to comment on the report.
