Luke Bronin Defeats Incumbent John Larson in Connecticut Primary

Former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin defeated 14-term incumbent U.S. Representative John Larson in the Democratic primary for Connecticut's 1st Congressional District on August 11, 2026. Bronin won approximately 54% of the vote to Larson's 33%, with candidates Jillian Gilchrest and Ruth Fortune splitting the remainder. The result marks the first time an incumbent congressman has been defeated in a party primary in Connecticut.

Bronin, 47, campaigned on a platform of generational change and new energy to oppose President Donald Trump. He secured the endorsement of the Democratic Party of Connecticut and raised $3.1 million. In contrast, the 78-year-old Larson was backed by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, the state's congressional delegation, and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. The campaign focused heavily on age and tenure, with Bronin criticizing Larson's legislative results despite his seniority, particularly regarding the Social Security trust fund.

Following the results, Bronin described the victory as a "political earthquake in Connecticut." Larson conceded the race, urging Democrats to "come together, heal and move forward." Bronin is now the heavy favorite for the general election on November 3, where he will face Republican physician Amy Chai in a district that has not elected a Republican since the Eisenhower administration.
