Uniper Signs 20-Year Deal for Canadian Ksi Lisims LNG

German state-owned gas trader Uniper signed a long-term agreement on July 29, 2026, to import 2 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually from the Ksi Lisims project for up to 20 years. The deal, signed at the Canadian Embassy in Berlin, marks the first major long-term LNG supply arrangement between Canada and Germany. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2032, supplying markets in Germany, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and the Netherlands.

The $30-billion Ksi Lisims project is located on Pearse Island in British Columbia and is co-developed by the Nisga’a Nation, Western LNG, and Rockies LNG. The project utilizes a floating liquefaction facility and is designed to have a carbon intensity 90% lower than industry standards by using hydropower. This agreement brings the facility's contracted capacity to 7 million tonnes per annum out of a projected 12 million, moving the project closer to a final investment decision.

The agreement supports a Canadian federal strategy to diversify energy exports away from the U.S. market. While the project is expected to contribute $15 billion to Canada's GDP, it faces hurdles; the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission pipeline supplying the facility remains subject to legal challenges in the B.C. Supreme Court. While government officials praised the strategic partnership, the group Stand.earth called the agreement a major step backwards for climate action.
